The Konjac Sponges To The Test! (English Version)

Not so long ago, the konjac sponges were THE thing  as far as skincare is concerned both on blogs and Youtube. This beauty trend comes- surprise, surprise- from Asia and has lately become quite popular even in Europe and the USA…  

So, what is a konjac sponge, and is it worth the buzz?

Konjac Sponges are actually little sponges made from  fibers of the root of the konjac plant (which is edible and vastly used in Asian Cusine)… They are used to cleanse the face, either on their own, or combined with any foaming face cleanser. They are also having a very, very mild exfoliating effect, while being extremely gentle on the skin- even the most sensitive one-, as they were traditionally used in Japan for  the new borns!

There is a huge variety of konjac sponges- apart from the normal one (which contains nothing but the konjac plant) one can also find konjac sponges infused with all kinds of ingredients:  clay, collagen, charcoal, lycopene, vitamin C, aloe vera etc. There are also konjac sponges both for the face and the body- the latter being simply bigger, so that they cover a larger surface.

Being the skincare freak I am, I HAD to try them out! You should never forget that cleansing is without a doubt the most important step of your skincare routine! No matter how many expensive and effective creams you use, if your skin is not perfectly clean all you do is to create layers of dirt, sebum, dust and air pollution on your skin…

First of all, the AT ONE Konjac Sponges come in a beautiful pouch that can be used  to store the konjac sponge while travelling! The sponges are really small and hard when dry, and in order to use them you have to soak them in warm water for 3-5 minutes. Then, they double in size and they get a really soft and unique gel-like texture! I believe that this exact texture is what makes them ideal even for the most sensitive skin!

When I first used it, I couldn’t stop rubbing my face with it, as the feeling is truly amazing! I used it both on its own, and with a foaming gel… I prefer using it on its own, especially in the middle of the day, after I remove my make-up and I don’t want to wash my face again, but I don’t feel it cleanses 100%, even with the amazing Bioderma… That’s when I use my konjac sponge and my skin gets extremely clean without drying out or being irritated at all! I honestly feel that there is no need to combine it with a cleanser as it does an amazing work on its own, and you are keeping it all natural!

Do not forget to hang it in a cool room (the bathroom would not be the perfect place), so that it dries out completely, as moisture is a very hospitable enviroment for bacteria and mould... You have to change your konjac sponge every 1-3 months, depending on how well you take care of it.

In the one month that I have been using it, I notice that my skin is more soft and its texture has improved a lot. It is also more radiant and the products I use afterwards sink in much faster! I also notice less and less pimples and breakouts, which is simply wonderful!

I decided to cut the Bamboo Charcoal Konjac Sponge for the body in two pieces, so that I can use one on my face and one on my body! It is really great with blackheads and breakouts, but I feel it is a little more aggressive for my extremely sensitive skin… As for my mum? Even though she was a bit skeptical in the begining, she now loves her konjac sponge and she says that her skin looks more radiant and clean, without getting more dry, as when she uses a cleanser….
